The Ford Ranger is one of several Blue Oval products earning high marks for its reliability in recent months, as the 2020 model secured a spot on Consumer Reports‘ most reliable used trucks list, while the 2021 Ranger ranked second on J.D. Power’s Initial Quality Study (IQS) last September. Now, the 2019 Ford Ranger has earned praise for its reliability via J.D. Power’s 2022 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), where it ranked second in its segment in that regard.
The 2019 Ford Ranger finished behind the Nissan Frontier and ahead of the Toyota Tacoma to take home second place in the new study’s dependability rankings as the current-gen pickup continues its hot streak. It’s just the latest accolade for Ford’s mid-size pickup, which recently won Vincentric’s 2022 Best CPO Value Award and Kelley Blue Book’s Five Year Cost to Own Award.
The U.S. Dependability Study specifically looks at three-year-old vehicles in regards to dependability. The vehicles in this study were first examined in J.D. Power’s 2019 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS), though the Vehicle Dependability Study measures owner satisfaction with a vehicle’s condition after three years, whether those owners find their vehicle as appealing now as when they first bought it, and what software updates have been added to the vehicle in that time span.
J.D. Power has tweaked its Vehicle Dependability Study in recent years to account for the technology features present in modern vehicles. Now, the study covers 184 different problem areas across nine major categories – climate, driving assistance, driving experience, exterior, features/controls/ displays, infotainment, interior, powertrain, and seats. The biggest nuisance for owners remains infotainment-related issues, however.
The 2019 Ford Ranger joins a few other Ford vehicles that have also finished strongly in J.D. Power’s newest VDS, including the Ford Mustang – which was the highest-ranked mid-size sports car – as well as the Lincoln MKZ, which earned the top spot in the premium mid-size car segment, and the Lincoln MKC, which finished second among all compact premium SUVs, while both Ford and Lincoln posted above-average results as individual brands.
