2022 Ford Maverick Awarded Green Truck Of The Year

By all accounts, the 2022 Ford Maverick is off to a strong start, earning universally positive reviews, outselling its main rival, the Hyundai Santa Cruz, in its first full month on sale, and receiving a nomination for North American Truck of the Year. The Maverick was also recently nominated for Green Truck of the Year, an honor that went to the 2021 Ford F-150 last year. Now, the 2022 Ford Maverick can add that trophy to its proverbial case, because Green Car Journal has named the new compact pickup as its Green Truck of the Year.

The Maverick beat out a host of rivals, including the Ford F-150, GMC Hummer EV, Rivian R1T, and Toyota Tundra to earn Green Truck of the Year honors, which was presented at the San Antonio Auto & Truck Show. The Maverick’s impressive fuel economy ratings – both for the hybrid version and those equipped with Ford’s 2.0L EcoBoost I-4 – undoubtedly played a pivotal role in this win, as each version is extremely efficient compared to the Maverick’s competition and trucks in general.

“Since the very first Green Car Awards were presented by Green Car Journal in 2005, the magazine’s mission has been to acknowledge and encourage environmental achievement in the auto industry,” the organization said. “It has always been important to recognize new models that are driving a green revolution on our highways by decreasing emissions, encouraging energy diversity, and improving efficiency. This enlightened way forward is crucial to vastly improving the automobile’s impact on the environment and ensuring a future for personal-use vehicles. High efficiency internal combustion models that eke out fuel economy numbers in the 30 to 40 mile-per-gallon range, and above, were unheard of in the recent past. They’re on the road today. Hybrids that extend fuel efficiency to 40 and 50 miles per gallon are not uncommon.”

The Maverick counts itself among this group with numbers that are extremely impressive for any vehicle, let along a pickup. The front-wheel drive 2.0L EcoBoost-powered Maverick returns 23 miles-per-gallon in the city, 30 on the highway, and 26 combined, while the all-wheel drive variant is rated at 22/29/25. Meanwhile, the hybrid Maverick features EPA ratings of 42/33/37, which is competitive with some of the more efficient compact cars on the market today.
