The Tigers ended the season with a loss to Army in the Armed Forces Bowl. I know: the Armed Forces Bowl doesn’t exactly scream football tradition. You can’t even see the BCS bowl games from there, but it is a BOWL GAME, right!? And we beat Florida last year so we’ve got that going for us.
This year, the SEC East is looking like a dogfight every week with Georgia coming off the National Championship and Tennessee loaded up for bear. Thank goodness for Vanderbilt, but that doesn’t happen until the end of October.
I’ve got two words for you, though: Luther Burden
The five-star freshman wide receiver out of St. Louis is being heralded as an immediate game changer, SEC Freshman of the year, and future first-ballot NFL Hall of Famer. Now we just need someone to throw him the ball.
The price of gas has been coming down a smidge, but it’s still a long way from cheap. The two-hour drive to Columbia will be less costly behind the wheel of a Ford Ranger. The Eagles made their first-ever appearance in a state championship game last season and came up just short.
But as the saying goes, close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. This year the Eagles are coming back strong.
Head coach Greg Jones parlayed last year’s championship run into a gig at the college level, and that means there’s a new sheriff in town for Friday nights this fall at the Crossley Family Activity Complex. Andy Lierman was named head coach this spring after Jones departed for Saturday football in Oregon.
Lierman earned the top sideline spot by turning last year’s defensive corps into one of the top defenses in the state allowing less than 20 points per game and guiding sophomore phenom Melvin Laster III to a Defensive Player of the Year award.
With Lierman in charge and Laster back on D, the Eagle offense should have plenty of time to shine. Highly recruited quarterback Sam Van Dyne is back for another year along with all-conference running back Micah Jo Barnett making the Eagles a strong contender for another run at state.
