Details regarding the elusive next-generation Ford Edge are beginning to trickle in. It seems likely that the crossover will be offered exclusively in China, as evidenced by an information leak in the Asian country, although it’s unclear at this point if it could be sold in North American markets after the 2023 model year. In China, at least, the next-generation crossover will retain the turbocharged Ford 2.0L I4 EcoBoost as the current-gen Edge, but its powertrain options will include a hybrid electric powertrain as well.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the next-gen Ford Edge will offer a hybrid powertrain. At this time, it’s not clear if said powertrain will be an entirely new powertrain, or if it will feature a propulsion system currently found in other vehicles made by Ford. The next-generation Edge is expected to be underpinned by the automaker’s C2 platform, which is currently found beneath vehicles such as the Ford Maverick and Ford Escape, both of which offer the Ford 2.5L hybrid powertrain. It stands to reason, then, that this powertrain could be easily utilized in the next-generation Ford Edge as well.
Currently, the North American variant of the Ford Edge features a choice of two engine options. The first is the turbocharged Ford 2.0L I4 EcoBoost engine, and the second, the twin-turbocharged Ford 2.7L V6 EcoBoost engine, can be found under the hood of the Edge ST.
The next-gen Ford Edge cabin takes styling cues from the Ford Evos, which is also exclusively offered in China. The new Edge incorporates a similar cabin design to that of the Evos, a coast-to-coast screen setup, flush-mounted door handles and a redesigned set of taillights out back, not unlike its platform stablemate.
