Ford Mustang GT, Shelby GT500 Cheaper To Insure Than Direct Rivals

My Post 74

For many, owning a sports car can be a rather expensive proposition, especially when it comes to insuring that vehicle. Luckily, it seems that the Ford Mustang GT and Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 are cheaper to insure than the pony car’s main rivals – the Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro – as MotorTrend found out after crunching the numbers recently.

Three Ford Mustang Shelby GT500s

MT based its analysis on data from Insure.com but used a very particular theoretical person to gather prices – a single, 40-year-old male with good credit and a spotless driving record and a short daily commute to work. Policy limits were specified as $100,000 in injury liability, $300,000 for all injuries, $50,000 for property damage, with comprehensive and uninsured motorist coverage and a $500 deductible.

This is a very specific example that obviously won’t work for everyone, but it at least gives us a baseline for comparing average insurance costs between the American sports car trio. In terms of non-V8 models, the EcoBoost Mustang costs $1,850 to insure annually, which is a bit more than the base Camaro’s cost of $1,732 but less than the Challenger at $2,000.

Things are more favorable for those that covet V8 power, however. The Ford Mustang GT costs, on average, $1,951 per year, which beat out the Camaro LT1 ($2,012) and the Challenger R/T ($2,091). The same goes for the Shelby GT500, which can be insured for around $2,488 per year versus $2,539 for the Camaro ZL1 and $3,282 for the Challenger Hellcat Redeye.

While all of these premiums are far higher than the average non-sports car, it’s still clear that choosing to purchase a Ford Mustang GT or GT500 can still save owners some cash each and every year. And considering the fact that the 2021 Ford Mustang was recently ranked ahead of its rivals by Consumer Reports, those folks will also seemingly be getting a superior product as well.
